Yesterday, a few of us decided to go on an overnight trip at Pulau Ubin. Marcus needed to get some photos of the greater mouse deer, and we also wanted to check out on the sun bear that was frequently spotted on Ubin recently, but we still do not have proper photographic proof of that.
We did not run into any sun bear during the overnight trip, though we managed to spot a few mouse deer, and Marcus got a few good photos. Here are some of the organisms we saw during the trip.
We found a Large-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus macrurus) with a chick! The looked really cute, and the adult looked as if it was resting on the head of the chick, using it like a pillow!
Here's another one.
We found lots of these little insects on a mangosteen tree, but I have no idea what exactly they are though.
On a jackfruit tree, we found at least 3 Spotted House Scorpions (Isometrus maculatus).
And we thought they looked really fat!
There was a little mantis on the same tree.
And nearby, we spotted a Oriental Whip Snake (Ahaetulla prasina). It was almost white in colour.
We found another one on a Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis), which was pale green in colour.
But this one must be the prettist one we saw during this trip. It's such a pretty green in colour! When we got nearer to it, it started sticking out its tongue.
Ubin is probably one of the best places in Singapore to spot the Common Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus)! Within one night, we spotted like 5 or of them!
This Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) was resting on a branch when we found it.
The next morning, we decided to go to Noordin Beach. Along the way, we walked past the heronry at one of the disused quarries, and saw a flock of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) flying over the quarry.
Here's a closer look at the Grey Heron.
Just outside the quarry, we found several huge Puff Ball Fungi (Calvatia sp.).
At Noordin, we went to take a look at the Berus Mata Buaya (Bruguiera hainesii), a critically endangered plant world-wide!
The tree has several long propagules too!
On our way back to Ubin Town, I noticed that the Nyireh Batu (xylocarpus moluccensis) near Noordin was fruiting! Guess I should come back another day in a few week's time to get some shots of the mature fruits!
So while we did not see the lengendary sun bear, it was still a very fulfilling and fun trip for all of us!
